Despite steadily falling rain, a good crowd was on hand September 29 to see the Town of Avon unveil its newest addition to the town map, Mikaela Way. Named in honor of Eagle-Vail native and Olympic Slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin, the street, formerly West Benchmark Road, is located east of Nottingham Lake and plays host to the Avon Library.
“It has the library so it’s an educational street,” laughed Shiffrin at a post-event press conference, and, it leads right to the Rec Center. It’s surreal to have a street named after me.”
The 19-year-old Shiffrin was joined by Avon Mayor Rich Carroll in the unveiling of the street sign before adjourning to the Avon Recreation Center for an autograph session and media questions.
“I want to win a World Championships medal here in 2015,” Shiffrin emphasized. “I always want to win every race I enter, but especially here.”
