Reigning World Championship Slalom gold medalist and overall World Cup Slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin returned to the podium recently as the Eagle-Vail resident presented a lifetime Vail Resorts Epic Pass to Janier Alexis Acevedo, winner of Stage 4 of the 2013 USA Pro Challenge in Beaver Creek.

Designated the Queen Stage of this year’s tour, the 103-mile race, which began in Steamboat Springs, sent riders up the new Bachelor Gulch climb, featuring pitches of up to 20 percent grade. After topping Bachelor Gulch, the leaders still had to race down a technical descent and power up the final two kilometer climb to Beaver Creek Village.

Referred to as “America’s Race,” the USA Pro Challenge took place August 19-25, traveling through eight host cities from Aspen to Denver. Featuring a challenging, 599-mile course, the third annual race showcased some of the best riders in all of professional cycling.
